Phrasal Verbs 

  • ask around: chiedere a più persone la stessa domanda

He asked around but nobody has seen her ( Lui ha chiesto in giro ma nessuna l’aveva vista )

  • ask out: invitare ad uscire

He asked me out to a dinner together ( Lui mi ha chiesto di uscire a cena insieme )

  • back up: annullare, cancellare, ribaltare, invertire, fare retromarcia

Back it up and do it again ( Annulla e rifallo di nuovo )

  • blow up: esplodere, gonfiare, andare su tutte le furie

He blew up when he discovered the truth ( E’ andato su tutte le furie quando ha scoperto la verità )

  • break down: macchina, apparecchio, veicolo che si rompe, smette di funzionare, dividere in piccole parti/pezzi

Your car is so old, it will break down for sure next time you drive it ( La tua macchina è così vecchia, che si romperà la prossima volta che la prendi )

break down: diventare sconvolto, turbato, scioccato

He was broken down by her mean actions ( Lui era sconvolto dalle sue azione cattive )

  • break in: entrare forzatamente in un’edificio

The police forces are about to break into the building in order to save the hostages ( Le forze di polizia stanno per entrare nell’edificio per salvare gli ostaggi )

  • break up: finire una relazione

They broke up after a 30 years of marriage ( Loro si sono separati dopo 30 anni di matrimonio )

  • break out: scappare

It’s not possible to break out from this prison (Non è possibile evadere da questa prigione)

  • bring (somebody) down: fare infelice

He brings me down with his jealousy ( Mi rende infelice con la sua gelosia )

call back: richiamare

I’ll call you back in a second ( Ti richiamo fra un secondo )

  • call off: cancellare

I called off the reservation for tonight ( Ho cancellato la prenotazione per stasera )

  • check out: controllare , guardare con attenzione, investigare

Do you want this bag ? Check it out first ( Vuoi la borsa ? Controllala prima )

  • cheer up: fare più felice, rallegrare

You have the power to always cheer me up ( Ha il potere di rallegrarmi sempre )

clean up: ordinare, sistemare, mettere a posto

Your room’s a mess! It needs to be cleaned up ! ( La tua stanza è una confusione. Cè bisogno di sistemarla )

  • come across: trovare per caso, inaspettatamente

I came across this amazing deal ( Ho trovato per caso questa occasione )

  • count on: contare su, avere fiducia

I count on you with my dog when I am out of town ( Ci conto su di te col mio cane quando son fuori città )

  • cut in: interrompere

He boss cut in during lunch break ( Il mio  cap mi ha interrotto durante la mia pausa pranzo )

  • dress up: vestirsi bene

I have to dress up because we are going out tonight ( Mi devo v entire bene perchè usciamo stasera )

drop (somebody) off: portare qualcuno e lasciarlo

I have to drop my kids off to school (Devo portare I miei bambini a scuola )

  • eat out: mangiare fuori casa

  • end up: decidere alla fine

I ended up with the white dress instead of the red ( Alla firth scelto il vestito bianco al posto del rosso )

  • figure out: capire, trovare la risposta

I have to figure out how to lose weight ( Devo capire come perdere peso )

fill in/out: compilare (Br En/Am En)

  • find out: scoprire

  • get along: piacersi a vicenda, andare d’accordo 

My dog and my cat get along very well ( Il mio cane e il m io gatto vanno d’accordo )

  • get away: andare in vacanza

I’m getting away for Mexico on August ( Vado in vacanza in Messico ad Agosto )

  • get back: ritornare

We just got back from Florida ( Siamo appena tornati dalla Florida )

get back: riavere qualcosa

I just got back my lost baggage ( Ho appena riavuto il mio bagaglio perso )

  • get over: superare una malattia, perdita, difficoltà

  • grow up: crescere, diventare adulto

  • hang in: rimanere positivi

  • hang out: passare del tempo rilassandosi

I am hanging out with my friends at the beach ( Mi sto rilassando coi miei amici in spiaggia )

  • hang on:  aspettare

  • hold back: nascondere/trattenere emozione
